While the console market is mostly dominated with Playstation and Xbox, Atari is planning for a modest entry into the competition. An Atari console was teased earlier this year at E3 but not much was given about it except a 20 second Youtube teaser that hinted the console would be housed in a wood like exterior.
However, new details have emerged as company spilled out some beans in an email to fans. “Our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.” the company revealed. The new console is clearly inspired from classic Atari 2600. Aside from features ribbed lines, a raised back, and a front panel that can either be glass or wood, Atari is featuring SD card support, a HDMI port, and four USB ports on the Ataribox. There will be two versions of the console, one in wood, and one in black / red.
Atari has stated that it plans to deliver classic games as well as current contents. It appears that the Ataribox will be similar to the NES and SNES Classic in providing access to old titles in modern retro hardware.
Regarding specs, price, release date and contents Atari released the following “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” reads an Atari statement.“We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”
