From its inception, Football has seen a lot of brilliant players grace the field. But rarely has it seen arguably the two best players of the generation giving their all to take their teams to new heights & the fact that they play for the two biggest rival clubs in Europe makes it even more fierce. 8 Ballon D’Ors, 1075+ goals,7 golden boots shared between them, Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi are the two brightest stars in world football.

Their Origins

Both Cristiano Ronaldo & Leo Messi struggled their way to the top. Coming from a working class family It was through his dad’s work as an equipment manager at a boy’s club that Ronaldo was first introduced to the game & the little kid who drank ,ate & slept football had finally found a little patch of grass under his feet. As for Messi, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency as a child but his stubbornness to play the sport he loves landed him at Barcelona at a tender age of only 13.

Everyone knows about their amazing stats and records so I don’t wanna bore you with those. Let’s just jump straight to it.

What does set Cristiano & Leo apart?

Leo as a footballista will call him is an “Architect”. He creates chances out of nothing, sees the pass that others cannot & then perfectly executes it.The most powerful thing about Leo however is that he rarely has an off day. When he cannot score, he assists. If he cannot assist, he draws defenders to create space. When the marking is too tight he drops deep to deliver those astonishing through balls. Simply put he is an ALL-STAR.

Cristiano, on the other hand, is more about power, pace ,dazzling skills, and stepovers. If Messi is that shy kid standing in the corner, Ronaldo is that cool guy who loves the limelight .Ronaldo has played in 3 major clubs with 3 very distinctive styles. At Sporting, he was this young wafer-thin kid who tried to dodge every challenge & dazzle his way through. Primarily playing as a Winger at United, he improved upon himself physical strength as well as emotional as EPL was more physical than Primeira Liga. From shooting crosses into the box to beating defenders with amazing solo runs, from scoring dipping “Knuckleball” free kicks to thundering long rangers, he’s got it all. After his Astronomical transfer to Los Blancos he had to adapt to a more technical style of play & boy, did he do that well. Slotting that penalty on his debut & now, 7 seasons later he is the all-time top scorer of the most successful club in Europe.

Messi Or Ronaldo?

Every rivalry has someone coming out on top , this one, however, is still up for debate even after so many years. But if I had to choose , I would say Messi is a more complete player. Ronaldo, nevertheless, is a better forward. He is quick, strong, a brilliant header of the ball & great with both feet. The ability to dictate the game is where Messi edges Ronaldo. Dropping deep to create chances, drawing defenders out & those pin-point passes to crack open defenses at will make him the deadliest player to deal with even when he doesn’t have his shooting boots on.It’s about power against finesse really. Ronaldo is all about that grit, the determination to never back down. Messi is an artist who makes football beautiful. Now let’s lay off the comparisons, chill with a few cold ones and tune in as they make sure our eyes never leave the screen while they’re on it.
