Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of the Star Wars spin-off film Han Solo have been fired. The duo who were first called upon by LucasFilm to direct the spin-off was shown the door on Tuesday. The director and president of LucasFilm, Kathleen Kennedy spoke about how there were creative differences and difference in vision between the duo and writers, Lawrence Kasdon and his son Jon.
The duo is known to work well with improvisational comedy, after their famed comedies 21 Jump Street and The Lego Film. However, the writers have argued that Han Solo is not a comedic personality but rather has a sarcastic and selfish personality. They were going off-script and Lawrence, who previously wrote Empire Strikes Back and The Return Of The Jedi for the franchise, wasn’t liking it. Kathleen having understood this, sided with her long-time colleague Lawrence and called for their outs. A source from the inside spoke to Variety about how there were differences between Kathleen and the directors since day one. “It was a culture clash from day one. She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks.” said the source.
Soon after their exits, Chris and Phil released a press statement. “Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew”
While it is still unclear who will take over, talks are Ron Howard or Joe Johsnton might. Despite tensions amidst production, LucasFilm has not spoken about any change in the release date, still slated for May 25th, 2018.
Han Solo which began shooting in February revolves around the Star Wars fan-favorite character Han Solo and his early days with his spaceship, the Millennium Falcon. The film stars prominent actors like Alden Ehrenreich (playing Han Solo), Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Emilia Clarke.
While there’s still a year left for its release, the next in the franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi directed by Rian Johnson is set to hit theaters this December. Here’s the teaser trailer for it!
