The iHeartRadio Music Awards were started by iHeartRadio to provide some recognition to the artists most popular on their network. In all honesty, one mustn’t expect to find great music in the nominees. Don’t get me wrong, but the songs, in most cases, are mainstream and cliched. Underrated artists don’t get their due credit if the listeners go with the general flow.
The small section that listens to songs by sifting through the popular songs are not enough to dominate the top choices. That being said, we have some great artists as well; country has seen a good share of music and artists like Alessia Cara, Thomas Rhett, Lukas Graham to name a few, deserve the hype surrounding them
iHeartRadio Music Awards 2017
If you watched the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2016, Taylor Swift winning awards didn’t particularly go well with a few fans. Some feel others deserved more, but as I said, it’s more of a popularity check. This year, the nominees include some good names (some bad ones too); Drake has made a name for himself in the Hip Hop category. Selecting a few categories from the nominations, I’d like to offer my predictions (and my preferences) regarding the winners of the category.
- Song of the Year:
– “Can’t Stop The Feeling” – Justin Timberlake
– “Cheap Thrills” – Sia featuring Sean Paul
– “Closer” – The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey
– “One Dance” – Drake featuring Wizkid and Kyla
– “Stressed Out” – twenty-one pilots
To be honest, if I made a song of the year list none of these would feature but should I pick a likely winner it would be One Dance. It’s a close call but I personally wish “Stressed Out” would win it.
- Best Duo/Group of the Year:
– Florida Georgia Line
– The Chainsmokers
– Twenty-one pilots
The Most likely winner would be ‘The Chainsmokers’ with all the catchy songs (or so people say) they have released. If I had to pick a winner it would be “Twenty One Pilots” because, in all honesty, they have been the best from this list.
- Alternative Rock Song of the Year:
– “Bored to Death” – blink-182
– “Dark Necessities” – Red Hot Chili Peppers
– “Heathens” – twenty-one pilots
– “Ride” – twenty-one pilots
– “Trouble” – Cage The Elephant
Heathens could win it because it featured in “Suicide Squad” but I personally found “Ride” better.
- Rock Artist of the Year:
– Five Finger Death Punch
– Red Hot Chili Peppers
It’s nice to see Shinedown back again but I think Disturbed will win it.
- Country Artist of the Year:
– Carrie Underwood
– Jason Aldean
– Keith Urban
– Luke Bryan
– Thomas Rhett
For those who say country music is s*!t please do reconsider your thoughts and listen to these artists. Probably winner? Carrie Underwood. Personal favorite? Keith Urban.
The awards have also seen the introduction of some new categories mostly being the ‘Best New Artist’ in different genres.
- Best New Country Artist: (New Category)
– Chris Lane
– Chris Stapleton
– Granger Smith
– Kelsea Ballerini
– Maren Morris
Possibly Maren Morris; personally Maren Morris as well.
- Best New Pop Artist: (New Category)
– Alessia Cara
– Lukas Graham
– The Chainsmokers
Possibly The Chainsmokers but I’d personally prefer Alessia Cara or Lukas Graham.
What to make of it?
In all honesty, the nominations in a vast majority are disappointing but it’s what people listen to these days. The chances of the personal favorites winning are less but it’s more likely that the mainstream songs and artists will win. The iHeartRadio Music Awards probably don’t have a recognition because of this very approach but for those interested mark your calendars for March 5th as it’ll be aired on that day.
