India has finally avenged the Uri attack. Indian Army today conducted 7 surgical strikes on Pakistan soil, 2 km behind LoC. The strike was conducted early morning between 12:30 AM and 4:30 AM that killed several terrorists and two Pakistani soldiers who were allegedly defending the region. This operation has striking resemblance to the one conducted by USA to kill Osama Bin Laden. Details of the operation location and timing was only shared with Pakistan counterpart well after the operation.

Director General of Military Operation (DGMO) Lt General Ranbir Singh said today in a joint press conference with officials from the Ministry of External Affairs –

“The Army has conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads on the LoC and significant casualties have been caused. The motive of this operation was to hit out at the terrorists who were planning to infiltrate into our territory. The operation was carried out mostly in Bhimber, Hotspring, Kel and Lipa sectors. We can’t allow terrorists to operate across the LoC. There has been a surge in infiltration. Based on very specific and credible information we received yesterday, that some terrorist teams had positioned themselves at launch pads along the LoC with an aim to carry out infiltration and terrorist strikes in J&K and various other metros in our country. There were launch pads at the LoC where terrorists were present waiting to infiltrate the nation and attack areas in Kashmir and metros across the county. We don’t have any plans for any further operation as of now. I spoke to the Pak DGMO, shared our concerns and told him that we conducted surgical strikes last night “

He further reminded Pakistan about the 2004 agreement with India under which the country had promised that it won’t allow its territory to be used to launch terrorist attacks against India. Minimum of 30 terrorists were killed during the strike. There was no casualty on Indian side. The army received intel about terror camps 6:00 PM yesterday.

The entire operation was monitored for the entire night by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval from the Army headquarters in New Delhi. It was because of this operation that Parrikar and Doval had cancelled their dinner on Wednesday night with the Coast Guard commanders.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Shariff was visibly furious with the operation. In a press release, he called the surgical strike as a simple cross-border firing –

“There has been no surgical strike by India, instead there had been cross border fire initiated and conducted by India which is existential phenomenon. As per rules of engagement same was strongly and befittingly responded by Pakistani troops, says a statement by Pakistan military. We are ready for the safety and defence of our country. We condemn this attack, our desire for peace should not be interpreted as our weakness”

Well, it makes sense for Pakistan to call the surgical stroke as cross-border firing event. After being isolated diplomatically, admitting to a surgical strike will seriously undermine Pakistan’s credibility.

UPDATE : The army is on high alert. Villages have been cleared out along the borders.
