By now everyone would be familiar with the term DCEU. The ginormous hype for the upcoming Justice League movie has made sure everyone is. Featuring Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman( Nope not gonna name Red undies here coz that’s a secret 😉 ), the Justice League faces off against a powerful foe in the name of Steppenwolf. And while the movie never features Darkseid in a pivotal rule, he is rumored to make a cameo appearance.

Let us explain how Steppenwolf is supposed to be connected to the big bad wrinkled God of Apokolips.

In the comics, Steppenwolf is Darkseid’s uncle and a part of his elite. Standing beside Darkseid at all times, good and bad, Steppenwolf has proved himself not only a capable warrior but also a competent general commanding the vast parademon forces of Apokolips. The movie version of this story offers some significant changes that can’t be ignored.

In the upcoming movie, Darkseid is Steppenwolf’s uncle instead of the other way around. The roles have been reversed.According to Geek Magazine:

“In Justice League, Batman and Wonder Woman, following Superman’s death in battling Doomsday, is intent on bringing together a team to take on Steppenwolf. This new menace is the nephew to Darkseid of Apokolips (presumably the big bad of the second JL adventure). Steppenwolf is on Earth to retrieve three Mother Boxes, one of which is now a part of Cyborg.”

This news, if true, will have a profound effect on the DCEU.

For starters, presenting Steppenwolf as Darkseid’s nephew will jumble up the familial connections in both Apokolips and New Genesis. Comic book fans certainly remember the exchange of Orion and Mr. Miracle between Highfather and Darkseid. Yeah that might become too complicated for now to happen. Considering the DCEU has already hinted at the Kirby-esque era New Gods, this certainly changes things. A LOT!!!

But for people who never touched comics, this news just might be too plain to pay heed. So what if Steppenwolf is the nephew. He is just the dummy the League will practice their moves on until Darkseid takes notice and steps in.

Steppenwolf actor Ciaran Hinds explains the axe wielding superpowered maniac as “old” and “tired”. Is Steppenwolf visiting Earth because his uncle asked him to or is it just an act of insubordination against the Dark Lord??

In a way this connection makes a lot of sense. Completely sticking to the source material would leave the movie too generic and predictable for the viewers. Maybe this revelation will spice things up a bit. Unlike their MCU counterparts, DCEU has a long history of pulling off such dicey maneuvers with undeniable grace and panache.

And for those people claiming that a daddy-son relationship would have made more sense, I have only this to say – This is the DCEU for crying out loud. They have stumped us before with stuff almost impossible to anticipate. Do you really think they would have gone for such a cliche “son goes on rampage and dies-daddy swoops in to take revenge” plot?? Do ya??

It is impossible to confirm this connection as of now. Geek magazine could have had their facts wrong and misprinted. If true this will undoubtedly alter the dynamics of the DCEU in the near future. Of course we wont know until Justice League hits the theaters next month on November 19th. Watch it for yourself and find out 🙂 .
