Academy Award winning director Ron Howard will be directing the Lucasfilm and Disney’s untitled Han Solo film. The spin-off will be a part of the Star Wars franchise with Alden Ehrenreich starring as the iconic space smuggler, Han Solo.
This decision comes just two days after directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the project. Citing creative differences, the studio had decided to let go of the directors after four-and-a-half months of directing. The iconic duo are well known for 21 Jump Street and its sequel, 22 Jump Street, both starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
The decision to fire both the directors and let Howard to hold the reins has been sending shock waves throughout the industry. After three-quarters through principal photography, firing of directors from such a colossal franchise was unprecedented. With Ron Howard now at the helm, the fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

Ron Howard, who directed the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995), the biographical drama A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Dan Brown’s thriller novel The Da Vinci Code (2006) has been called for rescue for his involvement in previous works of George Lucas. Howard appeared in Lucas’ coming-of-age breakout movie American Graffiti. He also directed Willow which was penned by George Lucas. Ron Howard has also stated in a podcast that he was approached by Lucas to direct 1999’s Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace.
Howard’s most defining work of his career was A Beautiful Mind, which won him his first Academy Award as a director. Though his recent works Inferno and Into The Heart of The Sea were high budget movies which failed to perform at the Box Office, Howard is still a safe bet to helm the Han Solo spin-off amidst such circumstances.
The filming of the untitled Han Solo movie will resume on 10th July. The presence of this legendary director on the set will hopefully pilot The Millennium Falcon out of this rattling situation.
Starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian along with Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke in undisclosed roles, the untitled Han Solo movie is set to release on May 25th, 2018.
