Recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter seems to hint that Tom Hardy’s Venom will be a slaughter-fest featuring Carnage as the major antagonist. After years of speculation, the psychopathic villain will finally appear on the silver screen.
Carnage was created by writer David Michelinie and artists Erik Larsen and Mark Bagley. The psychopathic villain who has absolutely no sense of morality was first seen in The Amazing Spiderman #360. Based on the elements of the anti-hero Venom, Carnage also derives his incredible strength from the same alien symbiote, which once affected Eddie Brock.
Carnage’s human host, Cletus Kasady was based on the most popular nemesis of Batman, The Joker. Sharing The Joker’s attributes of sadism and psychopathy, Cletus Kasady has a deeper connection with the alien symbiote than Venom which grants him superior control over his powers. The deep equilibrium established by the symbiote in the blood stream of Kasady grants Carnage a more terrifying red coloration.
In the comics, Eddie and Cletus shared a prison cell which ultimately created the super-villain Carnage. Using his telepathic link with the symbiote, Eddie managed to escape the cell, but in the process left a part of it, which attached itself to Cletus. Carnage’s power includes shape-shifting, physical strength which is superior to Venom and Spiderman, and the ability to plant thoughts into people’s mind.
Apart from Carnage, Sony’s Spider-Verse might also feature Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio. Both the supervillains have frequently battled Spiderman and are members of The Sinister Six. Kraven the Hunter (Sergei Kravinoff) is a Russian immigrant, gifted with high level intellect and uses a serum, which grants him superhuman strength, speed, agility and reflexes. Kraven is also the half-brother of Dmitri Smerdyakov, a frequent enemy of Spiderman popularly known as Chameleon.
Long time fans of The Spiderman PC Game will be well versed with the villain Mysterio, who might also share the screen with Kraven and Carnage. A master hypnotist and tactician, Mysterio will be a brilliant addition to the rogue gallery of the cinematic world of Spiderman.
As Sony confirmed earlier that Venom will share the same Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland’s Spiderman will face a diverse array of villains in the upcoming movies. From Michael Keaton’s Vulture to Tom Hardy’s Venom, our friendly neighbourhood superhero will find a hard time to catch his breath. The news of the shared universe was met with a positive reaction as long time fans of Spiderman will finally see their hero battle some of the best known villains of comic book history.
With Venom and Silver and Black in production, Sony might just introduce some more terrifying antagonists to the shared universe. As the saying goes, ‘The more, the merrier.’
Venom will hit the theaters on October 5, 2018. Spiderman : Homecoming will be opening in theaters on July 7th, 2017, starring Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei and Jon Favreau.
