If recent rumors are to be believed, the DCEU might be taking a bold step with two Batmen existing simultaneously in the current timeline. Or, fan-favourite Batfleck might be stepping down from the role, but not before featuring in the solo-movie of a certain Scarlet Speedster.

The chaotic line-up of Warner Bros. has already shown significant interest in two Jokers in the current universe, but thankfully, the two maniacs are not expected to share any continuity.

But with ‘The Batman’, which is to be directed by Matt Reeves, the existence of another Batman might actually put the entire franchise in jeopardy, instead of salvaging it. Reeves has earlier confirmed that ‘The Batman’ will be connected to the DCEU, which means that two Batmen will be sharing continuity in the same universe.

Matt Reeves has shown considerable interest in developing a Batman trilogy for the DCEU. With a crime-noir genre, Reeves has planned to take some inspiration from Nolan’s critically acclaimed The Dark Knight trilogy.

Recent reports have also emerged citing that Jake Gyllenhaal is the frontrunner for The Batman trilogy. Gyllenhaal has been in the news multiple times for being considered as the next Batman, though no official news is out yet regarding his deal with Warner Bros. for the role.

Interestingly, Mad Men star Jon Hamm has also been trying to land the role of The Caped Crusader for Matt Reeve’s trilogy.

Amidst so many speculations, it might seem that Ben Affleck is finally retiring from the role in such a short period of time. But thankfully, it’s not the end for Batfleck. According to Variety, Ben Affleck might last feature as the Batman in the upcoming movie Flashpoint, a solo outing for The Flash.

Last month, Flash actor Ezra Miller laid the groundwork for Flashpoint to shake the very foundations of the DCEU teasing: “What fans understand when they hear Flashpoint would be almost like hearing a word like ‘Crisis’.

“We start to understand that our precious DC universe will inevitably be torn asunder to an endless, headache-inducing fabric of multiversality. The DC Hyper-Extended Multiverse, as I plan to call it. Quote me!”

So what does it mean for Ben Affleck’s Batman? Well, the Flashpoint movie can be used as a reset button for the DCEU, which can give Ben Affleck a really cool way to retire from the franchise. Also, instead of rebooting the entire franchise, it can pave the way for a new Batman, who can be a younger version of the current Batman.

With the underwhelming performance of the Justice League in the box-office, the future of the franchise is far from being stellar. The news of Batfleck hanging the cowl is not a welcome news, considering the fact that Batfleck comes just behind Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in likability. Also, the departure of Jon Berg from the DCEU following Justice League’s failure has cast more shadows on the future of the DC Extended Universe.

The Batman is slated to release in late 2019.
