After months of speculations, Sony has finally confirmed the Venom movie which will star Tom Hardy as the titular character. The movie will be directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer. The solo Venom movie has been a top priority for Sony after the news broke out regarding the Sinister Six movie.
The 39-year old Hardy will be portraying the role of Eddie Brock, a freelance photographer who gets infected by the sentient alien symbiote which requires a host to survive. In return, the symbiote grants superhuman powers to the host. Venom was first seen on the silver screen in Sam Raimi’s Spiderman-3 and was portrayed by Topher Grace.
Tom Hardy has also portrayed Bane, one of Batman’s fiercest villains in the universally acclaimed The Dark Knight Rises. The brooding actor has starred in the critically acclaimed movie Mad Max: Fury Road, directed by George Miller. He is currently acting in the TV series Taboo, written by Steven Knight, which also has been well received by critics and fans alike. The English actor was also rumored to be the successor to Hugh Jackman as The Wolverine. Hardy will be acting in the upcoming World War movie, Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan.
The Venom movie will be written by Scott Rosenburg and Jeff Pinker, the latter of whom also worked on Sony’s The Amazing Spiderman – 2 starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.
Spiderman was rebooted and inducted into the MCU in 2016. Tom Holland will be playing as the teenage web-slinger and was first seen in Captain America: Civil War. Surprisingly, the Venom standalone won’t be in the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe which has left a lot of fans confused. The Venom movie will belong to the Sony universe in which Andrew Garfield portrayed the friendly neighborhood superhero. The initial reactions were not so positive but have changed after the announcement of Tom Hardy playing the role of the anti-hero Venom.
Sony Pictures tweeted that Hardy will be playing the big baddie in the upcoming Venom movie. Hardy has been a long time fan of Venom. Here’s the tweet:
