India will finally participate in the grandest sporting event in the world, the World Cup. Our senior side still aren’t strong enough to take on the heavyweights but this U-17 world cup will give us a nice teaser of what to expect for 2022. The final inspection took place yesterday in Kolkata and the Yuva Bharti Krirangan is all set to host the final on 28th of October. The deciding committee arranged a week-long inspection tour of the six venues; New Delhi, Goa, Kochi, Mumbai, Guwahati and Kolkata. Every venue will host at least 8 matches, giving the viewers plenty of games to choose from. Mumbai’s DY Patil stadium to host the opener.
Duration: 8th – 28th October.
Teams: India, Iraq, Iran, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia, New Caledonia, New Zealand. (UEFA, CONCACAF, CAF to hold the qualifiers in the coming months).
Group Draw: 7th July in Mumbai.
Official Slogan: Football takes over
Football has always been our weak spot & FIFA’s hoping to see a significant improvement in turnouts. Last time in Chile, the average attendance for games was just over 10k but with cheap tickets(less than 100 rupees) and some much-needed exposure, India’s first FIFA event looks to be on the right track.
